ORS helping out in East Africa emergency

ORS helping out in East Africa emergency
Kowsar is 17 months old and has never known a life outside this camp within Galkayo, Somalia. Her mother Fadumo was pregnant with her when she made the journey from Mogadishu to this town in the centre of Somalia.

Kowsar looks smaller than she should be, but there is more wrong with her. We see that Fadumo is clutching her daughter’s health card as well as a couple of UNICEF Oral Rehydration Sachets (ORS) for relief of dehydration caused by diarrhoea in children. She has been to see the mobile child and mother health team who are here in the camp today. These teams are supported by UNICEF and are aiming to vaccinate 1.2 million children up and down the country in the coming weeks.

Fadumo says, ‘Kowsar has an excessive cough and diarrhoea. It is due to her poor habitat.’ We ask Fadumo how they eat and she simply says, ‘We don’t have enough food.’

We are interested to know how Fadumo and her eight children ended up in Galkayo. Fadumo says, ‘We lived in Mogadishu, but there was lots of fighting and we were scared.’ At this moment she lifts her arm towards us, in the crease of her elbow is a big scar. We ask her what happened to her, she says, ‘I was caught in the cross fire in Mogadishu and hit by a sporadic bullet, I was too scared to stay.’

We ask Fadumo (who knows UNICEF well) what she thinks of the organisation, she says, ‘UNICEF gives us medicines, vaccinations and ORS, I am very happy about this.’

We ask her what she hopes for her children for the future and she says, ‘I hope my children will study and lead a better life in the future. This life is a tough life.’

We ask specifically what she wants for Kowsar at present, she says, ‘I hope Kowsar will get well again, I think UNICEF will help my child.’

Inspired Gifts respond to the real and changing needs of children around the world, so there may occasionally be a case where the item you selected is substituted for another because there is a greater need for it. Wherever possible, we will keep that substitution within the same category – for example, a gift of measles vaccines may be substituted for polio vaccines. We hope that through your purchase you are trusting us to make the best use of your gift to help children who need it right now.
