On Wednesday 9th March, UNICEF Australia staff spoke over skype with girls from a UNICEF supported women’s shelter in Afghanistan.
Many of the girls, who are all under 18, are escaping abusive situations and the shelter provides them with protection as well as opportunities to education, health, shelter and security.
The meeting was facilitated by Suraya Pakzad, a recipient of the 2008 International Women of Courage Award who runs these women’s shelters.
Watch below to find out more about the girls and how they ended up at the shelter.
In the video below Suraya describes a role play girls took part in for International Women's Day.
UNICEF Australia also asked people to tweet their question for the girls. In the video below, the girls are asked if they see or feel a change happening around the way women are perceived in their society.
