UNICEF Australia Ambassador, Erica Packer recently returned from a field trip to Laos where she saw first-hand UNICEF’s work helping children.
Mrs Packer visited a school that had received no UNICEF funding and was shocked to see the lack of facilities and access to education.
“We went as far as the roads could take you and then we had to go on a boat for three hours up the river to this remote village,” she said. “We climbed this hill up to the school and it was literally an open shed with a thatched roof. There was 30 kids in the class doing grades 1, 2 and 3 and there was one teacher for all three grades teaching them simultaneously. It was one of the most mind-blowing things I’d ever seen,” she said.
