Education

In one year alone, UNICEF provided more than 12 million children with educational materials.

Education is critical to our development as individuals and as societies, and it helps pave the way to a successful and productive future.

When we ensure that children have access to rights-based, quality education that is rooted in gender equality, we create a ripple effect of opportunity that impacts generations to come.

And yet current estimates place the number of out-of-school children at 72 million – more than three times the population of Australia. The majority of these children are girls.

UNICEF is committed to providing quality education.

UNICEF works to provide all children with access to a quality basic education. UNICEF recognises that a special effort is required on behalf of girls, who are often more marginalised and disadvantaged. If girls are left behind, our goals to eradicate poverty can never be achieved.

Education is vital to ensuring a better quality of life and survival for all children – it equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lifestyles, protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other diseases, and to take an active role in social, economic and political decision-making.

Education is the best investment any society can make for the health and well-being of its children, as well as its economic and social progress.

In one year alone UNICEF provided more than 12 million children with educational materials. The impact of this is long-lasting. Children of educated mothers are 50 per cent more likely to survive until the age of five than those whose mothers did not have the chance to go to school.
