Survival

UNICEF is the world’s largest procurer of vaccine for children

More than 24,000 children will die today, mostly from preventable causes. Some of these deaths will be caused by illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria. Others will be caused by war or HIV/AIDS. More than half of these deaths will be caused by malnutrition, poor hygiene and lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation.

The best start in life begins before birth. A mother's poor nutrition and ill health can affect her child's development and cause malnutrition and even death. Half a million women die in pregnancy each year, most during or a few days after childbirth and are unable to look after and protect their babies.

Vaccine supplied by UNICEF reaches 56 per cent of the world’s children, making UNICEF the world’s largest procurer of vaccine for children. Vaccine is essential to prevent life-threatening diseases such as measles, polio, tetanus, hepatitis B and diptheria.

UNICEF is also the world’s largest supplier of mosquito nets to children to prevent deaths from malaria, and the world’s largest supplier of Oral Rehydration Salts to prevent deaths caused by dehydration.

By addressing issues at a holistic level through large-scale efforts, we can continue to save millions of children’s lives.
