Ethiopia- Drought and Malnutrition

Ethiopia is dealing with the biggest numbers of affected people in relation to the crisis in East Africa. It is estimated that 4.5 million people will be in need of food relief till the end of the year including an estimated 652,500 children.

Many people are now relying on a diet of what is known as enset - commonly referred to as ‘false banana’ - an edible root which helps to trick an empty stomach into feeling full.

While preventing malnutrition before it becomes severe and life-threatening has been the cornerstone of the country’s nutrition strategy, a combination of drought, soaring food prices and a safety net that is being stretched to the limit has left many people food insecure.
