Polio hits children hard. It often leaves them permanently paralysed.
Shahadat will never chase a ball or run home from school. When he was two years old, a polio infection paralysed his right leg and dashed his chances of a normal childhood. Now, while his friends run and play, he can only crawl or shuffle around with a rolling support. Polio’s debilitating legacy will hold Shadadat back for the rest of his life.
Now there is good reason to hope Shahadat will be one of the last children of India to ever suffer this awful disease. In 2014 the country was declared free of polio along with all of South-East Asia. This historic achievement is thanks to a simple immunisation that protects children for life.
Today, polio is endemic in just three countries and we are closer than ever to eradicating it for good. This is one of humankind's greatest opportunities.
Donate now and help UNICEF fully immunise children. Together we can end polio for all time.
