Polio hits children hard. It often leaves them permanently paralysed.
Abdullah was two when he and his younger brother, Tukur, contracted polio. It attacked Abdullah’s body and left him without any movement in his legs, meaning he will never walk again.
Both brothers will never develop completely healthy, strong bodies and the real impact of their disabilities will become more apparent over the course of their lives. Sadly, because of his disability Abdullah faces barriers to his education and will miss out on opportunities to be productive and earn an income as a paid member of the workforce. In short, Abdullah and his brother Tukur will never be able to lift themselves from poverty.
The brutality of their situation is that it could have been prevented. Polio is endemic in just three countries and today we are closer than ever to eradicating it forever. This is one of humankind's greatest opportunities. A simple immunisation can protect a child for life.
