Malaria kills over 17,000 children each year in Madagascar, a country that has been affected by numerous natural disasters and is still facing enormous challenges including widespread malnutrition.
Prevention is the best way to fight malaria and Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLINs) have proved to be the most effective way to reduce transmission. A mosquito net can be all it takes to protect a child from this deadly disease.
UNICEF's Preventing Malaria in Madagascar program is working to ensure that in the target district of Alaotra Mangoro:
- 100 per cent of households have at least two LLINs,
- 95 per cent of children, and
- Pregnant women sleep under an LLIN.
