HELPING THE PEOPLE OF ASIA PACIFIC - UNICEF AUSTRALIA IS APPEALING FOR URGENT FUNDS AS LONG TERM PLANS ARE INITIATED.
- The series of tsunamis that wreaked havoc in Samoa and Tonga has resulted in at least 137 deaths, several hundred injured and more than 6,500 people being displaced. More than 50 per cent of the dead were children.
The 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck on the morning of Tuesday 29 September, leading to a tsunami. It is estimated more than 9,000 children have been directly affected by the tsunami and approximately 640 families have been made homeless.
Tonga’s only hospital was destroyed, and only 38 houses remain on the northern island of Niuatoputapu, the worst affected area. Food, water, shelter, clothing and sanitation continue to be the relief priorities.
- UNICEF is preparing $1 million worth of additional supplies to assist children and families in the Philippines displaced by Typhoon Ketsana. The typhoon (known locally as Ondoy) resulted in over 300 people being killed and hundreds of thousands stranded. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were also affected by this typhoon and resultant floods. A second typhoon, Parma, continued to devastate the region one week later.
- An earthquake reading 7.6 on the Richter scale killed at least 603 people in Indonesia on 30 September. Over 400 people are still missing. Water supplies have been damaged in many areas.
UNICEF is now aiming to help 50,000 families with basic hygiene material and safe drinking water and is continuing its disease vaccination program. UNICEF is the lead organisation working to implement a nutrition plan at a national level.
