HIV/AIDS

$1.50 worth of medicine can help save a child from HIV.

Over 1,000 babies are infected with HIV every day, during pregnancy, at birth or through breastfeeding. Yet HIV transmission from mothers to babies has never been easier to prevent. The drug that halves the chances of babies getting HIV from their mothers costs just $1.50.

A DEADLY KILLER.

Sadly, HIV/AIDS in most parts of the developing world is a quick death sentence. Lack of funds too often means no drugs, no education, no diagnosis or medical support. In many countries, the subject is taboo and inequalities between the sexes often mean that wives are unknowingly infected by their husbands, and pass it on to their innocent babies at birth.

UNITE FOR CHILDREN, UNITE AGAINST AIDS.

UNICEF is implementing a global plan to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and to give orphans and vulnerable children access to health, education and protection. This plan is supported by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, including Erica Packer and Gwyneth Paltrow. UNICEF has recently launched the short documentary ‘The Gift’, narrated by Ms Paltrow and shot on location in Rwanda. You can view this video on the right of the page.

As part of the global plan, effective UNICEF programs are already in place which must now be rolled out where the need is greatest. School feeding programs help keep children in school, where education helps prevent new infections. Family and community support help keep parents alive and keep families together. But millions of children are still at risk. Will you help?

  • $126 can feed six children orphaned by AIDS in China for a month.
  • $77 can cover the hygiene and sanitation costs for two months at a day-care centre for HIV-positive children in the Ukraine.
  • $208 can provide a year’s worth of school materials, and daily hot meals, for four children orphaned by AIDS in Malawi.

While you read this, too many mothers gave their unborn babies HIV, too many infants died of AIDS and too many children became orphans. Please help us stop the clock.
