Water and Sanitation in Cambodia Appeal
Unsafe drinking water has far-reaching consequences
More than one third of Cambodians live below the poverty line, struggling to survive on less than $1 USD a day. Poverty is especially pervasive in rural areas and among children, who constitute more than half of the country’s population.
1 in 12 children die before they reach the age of five and diarrhoea accounts for one-fifth of these deaths. Access to clean, safe water and adequate sanitation is vital for the survival and healthy development of children, by reducing sickness and death due to diarrhoea and other water-related diseases. But in Cambodia only just over half of the population has access to safe water. Worse still, only 16 per cent of the population in rural areas has access to a clean, private place to defecate and urinate. Instead this is done openly in the fields, spreading disease.
The lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities goes hand in hand with a lack of knowledge of the importance of sanitation and hygiene. It’s a fatal combination. And one that leads to the deaths of thousands of children each year.
