Roll Back Malaria Partnership
the Roll Back Malaria partnership aims to reduce malaria deaths by 50 per cent globally by the end of 2010.
The Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partnership was established by UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Program in 1998 to help reduce the impact of malaria worldwide.
Impact of the Partnership
The impact of the Roll Back Malaria partnership will save an estimated 4.2 million lives by 2015 in the 20 African countries where malaria is most prevalent.
The strength of the Roll Back Malaria partnership lies in its ability to form effective partnerships both globally and nationally. Partners work together to scale up malaria-control efforts at country level, coordinating their activities to avoid duplication and fragmentation, and to ensure optimal use of resources.
One of UNICEF’s major contributions to the partnership is the sourcing and provision of malaria-related commodities, principally Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets. These nets are the current standard for protection against malaria, especially for young children and pregnant women. Insecticide-treated nets can reduce child deaths by 20 per cent and clinical cases of malaria by 50 per cent.
Vision of the Partnership
The Roll Back Malaria vision is for a world free from the burden of malaria. The goals include:
- Reducing global malaria cases from 2000 levels by 50 per cent in 2010, by 75 per cent in 2015.
- Eliminating malaria in 8-10 countries by 2015 and afterwards in all countries in the pre-elimination phase today.
- In the long term, eradicating malaria world-wide by reducing the global incidence to zero through progressive elimination in countries.
The Roll Back Malaria partnership allows more people to access prevention and treatment services for malaria, sparking hope that the number of children who become sick and die from malaria will continue to decline.
