90 therapeutic milk sachets

When babies or young children are extremely malnourished they cannot tolerate normal food. Therapeutic milk contains the specific balance of energy, fats, protein and minerals that is needed by acutely malnourished children. As much a medicine as a food, it is provided in clinics and saves the lives of the most vulnerable children.

Tackling malnutrition in Côte d'Ivoire

Doris is only three months old and already suffers from dehydration and severe malnutrition. Doris is shown above, sitting in the arms of her grandmother Veronique at a health centre in the village of Zouan Hounein, Côte d'Ivoire. Nurse Blanidne feeds Doris therapeutic milk which is full of nutrients designed to help her build up strength.

Doris is slowly getting better, and will stay at the health centre until she regains her health, unlike her older sister, who sadly passed away from malnutrition when she was just three years old.

Across Côte d'Ivoire, six per cent of children suffer from acute malnutrition that requires immediate medical intervention to survive.

The first 1,000 days from the start of a woman’s pregnancy to a child’s second birthday offer an extraordinary window of opportunity for preventing undernutrition and its consequences, which is why UNICEF concentrates actions around this critical period. Investments in nutrition – particularly in the earliest years of life – can yield dramatic results for children, their families, and communities.
