Australian Government’s $10 million investment in anti-bullying
UNICEF Australia welcomes the Australian Government’s $10 million investment in anti-bullying
UNICEF Australia today welcomes the Australian Government announcement of a $10million investment in a national plan to address bullying. Every child in Australia has a right to be safe at all times, but we know that bullying harms children from the schoolyard to the home.
We commend the government for swiftly committing to address two key recommendations in the Final Report from the Anti-Bullying Rapid Review. These include running a national public awareness campaign on bullying, and creating resources for teachers, students and parents on how to respond to and prevent bullying.
UNICEF Australia’s own research shows that bullying can follow children wherever they go, particularly in the online world. And while 75 per cent of Australian teens know what to do when they see someone bullied online, that leaves 1 in 4 young people still needing more support to respond. That’s why today’s announcement is so important. If implemented well, these initiatives should help empower and equip schools to build safe and positive environments for young people.
We look forward to working with the Government to see these important reforms implemented, and in doing so help make Australia the safest place in the world for a child to grow up.
