Children need urgent support after devastating floods in Nepal
Severe flooding has devastated communities in Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Tanahun District along the Nepal–Tibet border, leaving children and their families facing loss, displacement and uncertainty. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands more are still missing, with the full extent of the disaster still emerging as search and rescue efforts continue. Homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure have been damaged, while disrupted communications and blocked access routes are making it difficult to reach some of the hardest-hit communities.
UNICEF is on the ground in Nepal, working alongside the Government of Nepal and local partners to deliver lifesaving support to children and families affected by the floods. When devastating floods swept through her community, 13-year-old Sonika ran uphill carrying her younger brother to safety. Behind them, the family home where generations had lived was swept away. Separated from her parents and unable to reach them by phone, Sonika fled through the jungle, unsure if she would see them again.
The family was reunited an hour later, but their home is gone and Sonika's education has been disrupted. Like many children affected by the floods, she now faces an uncertain future.
How UNICEF is responding to the Nepal flood
UNICEF is on the ground, helping children and families survive and recover from the devastating floods in Nepal.
- A UNICEF flight carrying 84 tonnes of vital aid has arrived in Kathmandu, helping ensure children and families can access essentials such as safe water, hygiene supplies, tents, winter clothing and learning resources.
- Emergency safe water and hygiene supplies have already reached more than 19,000 people in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
- Support is being provided to children and families through lifesaving nutrition, emergency health supplies, mental health support and child protection services.
UNICEF teams are continuing to work with the Government of Nepal and local partners to help deliver for children and families affected by this emergency.
How will my donation help children in Nepal?
Children have lost homes, safe water, health services and schools. Your donation can help UNICEF deliver lifesaving supplies and protection to children and families affected by the floods in Nepal.
- $100 could help provide 20,900 water purification tablets, enough to provide 225 children with safe drinking water for one month.
- $127 could help provide 252 sachets of Plumpy'Nut®, enough to help two children recover from severe malnutrition.
- $500 could help provide hygiene and dignity kits for seven families, each packed with emergency supplies including soap, water containers, cleaning products and reusable menstrual products.
- 76¢on average, 76 cents to every dollar spent for the past three years went directly to helping children in need, including long-term programs, emergency response and community education.
- 24¢on average, 16 cents to every dollar spent for the past three years went to essential fundraising costs that helped us generate more impact for children, 8 cents went to admin costs, such as keeping your personal data safe.
