Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic and energy crisis in decades. Help children and families in need.

The crisis in Sri Lanka has left 2.3 million children in need of some form of humanitarian assistance. Children are at the heart of this crisis.

As public transport is cut, many children are missing out on school, exposing them to a broad range of risks, including exploitation, abuse, violence, and child labour.

Even before the current crisis, Sri Lanka had the second highest child malnutrition rate in South Asia. Under rising food prices, 70 percent of households are now reporting reduced food consumption.

Sri Lanka’s alarming food insecurity is further threatened by the shortage of safe water and energy. Power is being cut for up to 13 hours every day. Parents are forced to queue for hours for fuel and essential food items, leaving limited time to care for their children. With mounting economic pressures, reports of violence against children and exploitation are increasing.

"The current crisis is stretching families to their limits. Children are going to bed distressed and on empty stomachs. If we do not act now, it is the most vulnerable boys and girls who will pay the highest price for a crisis not of their making"

Soaring prices are making essential supplies like food and fuel beyond reach for many families.

“Those days when I ask my parents to buy something like books or a schoolbag, they would immediately get it for me, but now they are unable to do as before,” says grade seven student Abishayan.

What UNICEF is doing

UNICEF is on the ground, supporting children before, during, and after a crisis. Your philanthropy helps us meet the most urgent needs of Sri Lankan children in crisis, from reducing barriers to education to delivering critical medical supplies.
UNICEF is working to treat children for severe acute malnutrition, support pregnant mothers to receive a nutritious diet, and provide safe water.
However, there is so much more that needs to be done. We need your help as never before. Please donate to UNICEF Australia to help Sri Lankan children and their families.

How you can help

  • $5,000 could provide more than 8,000 people with access to safe water
  • $10,000 could ensure that 137 children with Severe Acute Malnutrition have access to treatment with ready-to-use therapeutic food
  • $25,000 could provide essential medicines and medical supplies to more than 11,000  children and pregnant women

How do we use each dollar donated?

  • 90¢
90 cents of every dollar donated to this emergency went directly to our emergency response work in the field.
  • 10¢
10 cents per dollar covers the essential administrative costs of raising public awareness and fundraising to generate more support for UNICEF’s emergency response.

In the unlikely event that UNICEF receives more funds than needed for this emergency response, your gift will help support UNICEF's work for children in need around the world.
