Sudan Crisis

No child is safe in Al Fasher as conflict continues to devastate lives.

Amid escalating violence, an estimated 130,000 children in Al Fasher, North Darfur, are at high risk of grave rights violations, with reports of abduction, killing, maiming, and sexual violence. For nearly two years, children and their families have been trapped under siege, cut off from food, water, and healthcare.

UNICEF calls for an immediate ceasefire, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access, and protection of all children.

Over 15.2 million children in Sudan have had their lives shattered by conflict and urgently need humanitarian support.

Since conflict escalated in mid-April 2023 into a full-scale civil war, the impact on Sudan's children has been immense: extreme violence, mass displacement, famine and disease outbreaks. Families have been forced to flee their homes, creating the world’s largest child displacement crisis, with 5 million children displaced. Health systems have collapsed, severe food shortages persist, and schools have shut down.

In 2025, grave violations against children have surged. They are being killed, maimed, and many children, especially girls, face terrifying risks to their safety, including sexual violence. Their futures are being stolen and their childhoods lost.

The numbers tell a devastating story:

After days under siege, Naeema fled Al Fasher in North Darfur with her husband and three children, but tragically her husband was killed. Naeema and her children now live in a makeshift shelter alongside thousands of others at a camp for internally displaced people, where she is receiving support from UNICEF and our partners.

“The situation was very difficult,” Naeema said. “We left Al Fasher exhausted and weak. People were dying.”

How is UNICEF responding in Sudan?

Even in the face of an escalating crisis, UNICEF continues to deliver for every child, despite limited access and significant security risks. Here's how you can help children and families in Sudan.

  • $100 could provide 330 vaccine doses, ensuring that children’s futures are protected against preventable but dangerous diseases.
  • $135 could provide 252 sachets of lifesaving ready-to-eat therapeutic food that could help treat two children with severe malnutrition.
  • $500 could provide 83,334 water purification tablets, each able to create up to 5 litres of clean drinking water, to help prevent deadly waterborne diseases.
