Help children in emergencies

Right now, more than 450 million children around the world – or nearly 1 in 5 – live in or have fled a conflict zone. Together, we can help every child in crisis survive and thrive.

From the devastating war in Gaza and the recent escalation of conflict in Lebanon, to ongoing emergencies in places like Sudan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, millions of children’s lives are being shattered by destruction, loss and uncertainty. These emergencies are hitting children the hardest, destroying their access to food, clean water, shelter and healthcare, and leaving them vulnerable to malnutrition, disease, and unsafe living conditions.

UNICEF is providing urgent support, and your generous end-of-year gift will help children and families rebuild their lives.

With the help of people like you, UNICEF has helped save more children's lives than any other charity around the world – 90 million since 1990. Your donations allow us to be there for children before, during and after an emergency – from the critical first hours, when we deliver lifesaving supplies like clean water and therapeutic food, to recovery and rehabilitation. From survival to safety, your gift can provide emotional support to help children process their trauma and practical help like emergency cash so families can rebuild for the future. Together, we are there for every step, for every child. No matter what.

"I’ve been displaced since the war began and gave birth during it. The pregnancy conditions were dire because of the lack of food and continuous illness from poor hygiene... I try to breastfeed naturally, but poor nutrition affects my health, and my ability to produce milk."

From Gaza to Afghanistan, children around the world are experiencing unimaginable hardship. As the end of the year approaches, help them survive and recover.

A devastating number of emergencies are unfolding around the world, pushing families like Eman’s to the brink as they fight for survival. At this time of huge need, UNICEF responded to 412 emergencies in 107 countries last year. But sadly, many of these crises don’t make the headlines.

In Gaza, nearly half the population is displaced by the ongoing conflict, and children and families are living in overcrowded shelters with severe shortages of clean water, sanitation, food and medications. Cases of malnutrition and life-threatening illnesses like diarrhoea are skyrocketing, and many families are facing looming famine.

Meanwhile, Sudan is also facing a hunger catastrophe driven by 18 months of conflict. Tragically, more than 5 million children are displaced, creating the largest child displacement in the world.

In Afghanistan, children are experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises due to longstanding conflict, economic decline and climate shocks, including devastating flash floods in the country’s northeast in May 2024.

1,000

Every day, more than 1,000 children under five die from illnesses caused by lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene.

700,000

In Sudan, more than 700,000 children are expected to suffer from the most life-threatening form of malnutrition this year.

1.4 million

More than 1.4 million girls have been excluded from secondary school in Afghanistan.

As the end of year approaches, children around the world need us more than ever. UNICEF delivers lifesaving supplies when an emergency strikes and we remain on the ground to provide children with the long-term support they need to recover. Your gift can help children in crisis make the journey from survival to safety.
