200 child malnutrition testers

Three million children under five die every year due to undernutrition, but early detection significantly improves a child's chance of survival. These bands measure a child's upper arm circumference, helping us assess if a child is malnourished and needs immediate medical help.

Raymond, age 15 months, has his nutrition status checked by a Community Health Worker in the Tonkolili District of Sierra Leone. The green section of the arm band indicates that he is not malnourished – a sign of the progress being made in a country with one of the highest under-5 mortality rates. UNICEF is working with the Government and other partners on a range of child health services, including the provision of medical supplies and training.
