It’s been a year since the Taliban took over in Afghanistan, and even more families are suffering extreme poverty. Life for children is harder than ever before.
More than 1 million children under five are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year and are at risk of dying without immediate treatment.
UNICEF has been in Afghanistan for 65 years. We have a presence in every region, and in the past year, we’ve been scaling up our teams to make an even greater impact for children.
Thanks to pre-positioned supplies made possible by our monthly donors, since January we’ve already been able to treat nearly 280,000 children under five years old in Afghanistan for severe acute malnutrition.
But many more children are going hungry. We can reach them, but we can't do it alone.

Parwana is one of more than 1 million children with severe acute malnutrition. Her family fled their home due to conflict and found safety in the west of Afghanistan.
Her mother Malika is the only breadwinner of her family and earns just $0.5 per kilogram by weaving yarn from fleece. It's not enough to buy the food the family needs.
