26 September 2026 – Temporary classrooms and school supplies from UNICEF Australia will leave Brisbane for Nepal today to get children back to learning, one month on from the catastrophic floods.

Children return to learning in temporary learning centres set up with UNICEF support after devastating floods damaged classrooms and disrupted education in affected communities.

The shipment, which leaves from Brisbane airport, includes:

  • High performance tents - to be used as temporary classrooms
  • ‘School in a Box’ kits, with enough learning supplies in each for three months

With 268 damaged or destroyed classrooms and several schools being used as shelters for families, it is estimated 14,000 children’s education is impacted by the flooding disaster across Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.

The high performance tents will add to the temporary classrooms already being set up in the Nepal disaster zone. The tents are designed for durability against the elements and years-long use.

UNICEF ‘School in a Box’ kits arrive in a waterproof metal box which includes blackboard paint and a brush so that the lid can be transformed into a blackboard. Contained in the kit are learning and teaching supplies including paper and stationery, and Braille-embossed supplies, such as a clock and posters, allowing children with visual impairments to learn.

Return to education is a critical part of recovery for children by restoring a sense of normalcy to help them manage trauma, and to ensure their progress in education before the disaster is not reversed.
