In Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation of more than 80 islands stretching across 1,300 kilometers, isolation makes access to basic services like healthcare, education, and clean water a constant struggle for many families.

But hope travels far. Sometimes by boat, sometimes by truck, and often through powerful partnerships and local collaboration. Around the world, UNICEF works with partners to deliver life-changing programs – from clean water and nutrition to early learning and emergency relief – so no child is left behind.

Clean water, safer futures

Access to clean water and sanitation remains a daily challenge in Vanuatu, especially after natural disasters. The country’s location in the Pacific makes it highly vulnerable to cyclones, earthquakes, and other extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.

When a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck in December 2024, tens of thousands of children were affected. In Mele, the country’s largest village, landslides destroyed the entire water system, leaving 7,000 people without a reliable water and sanitation supply.

UNICEF responded swiftly, delivering emergency water trucking, temporary tanks, and essential supplies. But long-term recovery takes time and teamwork.

"We’ve seen how improved WASH facilities not only support learning but also inspire children to become agents of change in their communities."

Clean water isn’t just about hygiene – it’s about dignity, safety, and opportunity. When children have access to safe water and sanitation at school, they’re more likely to stay in class, stay healthy, and feel confident.

Early steps, lasting impact

Just as clean water brings safety and dignity, early learning brings confidence and connection – especially when families are empowered to lead the way.

In times of crisis, education is often one of the first things to be disrupted and one of the last to return. But with the right support, even the most isolated communities can give their children a strong start.

UNICEF’s ‘Supporting the Early Years’ program is helping parents become active partners in their child’s preschool journey. Through workshops and take-home resources, families are gaining practical tools, from nutrition and protection to storytelling and literacy, that build stronger bonds and lifelong learning habits.

"We’ve seen children who never had books at home now retelling stories from beginning to end – not by memorising, but by truly understanding. It’s a powerful sign of how small resources, when paired with support, can transform learning at home."

Together, for every child

Partnerships are at the heart of UNICEF’s work. Across the Pacific and around the world, we’re joining forces with local communities and partners to ensure every child has the chance to survive, learn, and thrive – no matter where they live. For over a decade, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has supported UNICEF to help us deliver life-changing programs. From clean water and nutrition to early education and emergency relief, our impact is real and lasting.

"Partnering with UNICEF has enabled us to reach communities in Vanuatu with the support and impact we’ve been striving for, especially in areas affected by disaster. Seeing how our joint efforts have strengthened education and health services for children has been incredibly powerful and has helped shape ideas for future collaboration."
