Amid one crisis, another has emerged. Nearly six months after polio made a comeback in the war-torn Syrian Arab Republic, health workers are still struggling to contain the outbreak. UNICEF-supported vaccination efforts are under way, but the volatile security situation and limited access to besieged areas are among barriers that have prevented as many as 104,000 children from being immunized in any of the five rounds to date.
