UNICEF Australia is joining the Walkley Foundation’s Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism for the first time, to deliver the Humanitarian Storytelling Award.

Applications for the Humanitarian Storytelling Award open on Monday 4 March.

At a time of global conflicts making headlines in Gaza and the Ukraine, the Humanitarian Storytelling Award seeks to elevate the unheard stories of communities affected by humanitarian crisis. It celebrates storytelling that does no harm, respects dignity, is inclusive, compassionate and people focused. It recognises the role that journalists play in defending dignity.

UNICEF Australia has a long-held commitment to being there for children before, during and after emergencies, to support their health, education and protection. In emergency zones UNICEF provides immediate relief including medical supplies, safe spaces for children, and mental health support. UNICEF also supports development in countries experiencing prolonged crises to ensure children have sustained access to nutrition, clean water, routine healthcare, education and protection services.

UNICEF Australia CEO Tony Stuart said, “Children are unfairly impacted in the worst crises around the world. UNICEF’s experience operating in the hardest places on earth to be a child, shows us the long-term impact this can have on a child’s life if they do not receive support.

"We are proud to support the Humanitarian Storytelling Award, as we believe in the power of sharing real life experiences in making a difference to those who need it most. Crises can feel like things that happen far away to other people, and humanitarian storytelling is vital in our community for creating greater understanding of others and in driving change."

“We know there will be a high calibre of passionate entrants and we look forward to meeting them and seeing their work,” Mr Stuart said.

The Walkley Foundation’s Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism said it’s delighted to be partnering with UNICEF Australia to highlight the stories of people surviving crisis and conflict.
