What happened when the earthquakes hit Türkiye and Syria?
On February 6, at about 4 am, a massive earthquake hit the Türkiye (previously known as Turkey) and Syria border. It was so strong it was felt as far as Egypt, Cyprus and Iraq, that’s like an earthquake in Sydney being felt in Adelaide. Only nine hours later, another earthquake hit and for weeks, aftershocks were felt. Combined, these two earthquakes and aftershocks caused massive destruction.
Devastatingly, more than 50,000 people died across Türkiye and Syria, and tens of thousands more were injured. With homes and buildings destroyed, those who survived have been left with nowhere to go. The rain, snow, and freezing cold temperatures made the rescue and emergency efforts harder.
