Myanmar Earthquakes

Over 100 days since Myanmar’s deadly earthquakes, and the needs are immense.

On 28 March, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the early afternoon, followed just two minutes later by a 6.4 earthquake. Tragically, over 3,700 people, including children, lost their lives, and more than 5,000 others were injured.

The destruction has been immense. Homes, schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure have been severely damaged or destroyed, leaving entire communities cut off due to landslides and collapsed roads. Thousands of children and families are still living in overcrowded, makeshift shelters with limited access to clean water, healthcare, and education.

UNICEF teams are on the ground, working in incredibly challenging conditions to deliver lifesaving supplies and services, including clean water, newborn kits, healthcare and nutrition support, child protection services, and safe learning spaces. As the crisis continues to evolve, our teams will stay on the ground, working closely with our partners to deliver for children and their families.

The disaster is worsening an already dire situation. We urgently need your help to do more for children and their families. Please donate today.

What is happening in Myanmar?

The devastating earthquakes have struck at a time when children in Myanmar were already facing incredible hardship. After four years of escalating conflict, millions of children are living in fear, displacement, and poverty.

The challenges they face are immense.

  • Natural disasters, disease outbreaks, food insecurity, and inflation are pushing families to the brink.
  • Many have lost their livelihoods and struggle to afford basic necessities like food and clean water.
  • Electricity shortages, limited Internet access, and disrupted public services mean children can’t access healthcare or education.

Then there is ongoing violence, arbitrary arrests, and detention, tearing families apart. Children are being recruited into armed conflict and forced into early marriage. Tragically, in 2024 alone, at least 600 children had been killed or injured.

Even before the earthquakes, UNICEF estimated that 19.9 million people – including 6.4 million children – would need humanitarian assistance in Myanmar in 2025. Now, those numbers will be even higher as communities work to recover and rebuild.

UNICEF has been supporting children in Myanmar since 1950, and we will continue to stay on the ground to deliver lifesaving support.

How will my donation help children in crisis in Myanmar?

Even in the face of an escalating crisis in Myanmar, UNICEF continues to deliver for every child, no matter what.

  • $100 could provide 16,667 water purification tablets, each able to create up to 5 litres of clean drinking water.
  • $150 could help provide 14,285 sachets of nutrient powder for children.
  • $494 could help provide two ‘School-in-a-Boxes' so 80 children can continue their education.

How do we use each dollar donated?

  • 80¢
on average, 80 cents to every dollar spent for the past three years went directly to helping children in need, including long-term programs, emergency response and community education.
  • 20¢
on average, 14 cents to every dollar spent for the past three years went to essential fundraising costs that helped us generate more impact for children, 6 cents went to admin costs, such as keeping your personal data safe.

If you choose to donate monthly, or in the unlikely event that UNICEF receives more funds than needed for this emergency response, your gift will help support UNICEF's work for children in need around the world.
