What: UNICEF Australia launches fundraising appeal for tsunami-devastated Tonga

Details: Tonga has been cut off from the rest of the world since a deadly volcanic eruption and tsunami on 15 January 2022. Ash up to 10cm thick is blanketing much of the country, contaminating food and water supplies and affecting air quality. Fears are growing of an outbreak of waterborne diseases and, with major disruptions to communication lines, UNICEF is concerned about the health and wellbeing of children.

UNICEF has already sent a first shipment of emergency supplies aboard HMAS Adelaide to support more than 10,000 children and families, including water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) kits and recreation kits. UNICEF Pacific estimates at least $AUD1.61 million in funding is required to address the immediate needs of children and families, but this figure is likely to rapidly grow as the full extent of the damage is determined.

UNICEF Australia is appealing for donations to its emergency recovery appeal to provide ongoing critical support to the people of Tonga and ensure a swift recovery.
