UNICEF Australia welcomes Australia's commitment to GAVI, the vaccine alliance

UNICEF Australia warmly welcomes the announcement from the Australian Government to provide $386 million to support the work of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, from 2026 to 2030. This new funding commitment is essential in helping children fight deadly diseases in our local region.

As the world's biggest buyer and supplier of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF plays a key role in the Vaccine Alliance which has helped vaccinate more than 1.1 billion children globally, saving more than 18.8 million lives.

In just our local region of Asia and Pacific, Gavi has helped immunise more than 633 million children.

Vaccines save children’s lives. For deadly diseases like measles, polio, tetanus, tuberculosis, diphtheria and whooping cough, vaccines are the only defence.

And the need for vaccines is greater than ever - the COVID-19 pandemic put a huge strain on health systems around the world as well as logistics and supply chains. It also created a perfect storm for other disease outbreaks, such as polio which has re-emerged in Papua New Guinea in 2025.

This new investment in Gavi represents Australia’s largest ever investment and shows that we continue to play a key role in global health leadership.

UNICEF Australia looks forward to working with the Australian Government alongside our global partners, to vaccinate children in the Asia Pacific and around the world, because every child deserves the same protection against preventable diseases.
