Every year on 20 November, we celebrate World Children’s Day. This special day marks the anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, where governments (including Australia) agreed on 54 different rights that every child under 18 years old should have to live a safe, healthy and happy life.
On World Children’s Day, UNICEF Australia encourages students of all ages to make some noise about the issues that matter most to them and this year, the spotlight is something that close to every child’s heart – play!

We believe that every child should have the chance to speak up about issues they care about. It’s their future, but too often their voices aren’t heard. On World Children’s Day, let’s turn the volume up on what they have to say.
Article 12 of the Convention of the Rights of the Child states that:
Children have the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.
This World Children’s Day, we invite every child in Australia to speak up through A Minute of Loudness, where they’re encouraged to share their ideas on how to make Australia an even better place for all children, especially when it comes to play.
Every child has the right to play - no matter who they are or where they live. Playing helps you learn, make friends, and feel happy.
Right now, millions of children are missing out on this basic right, because of conflict, displacement, inequality or lack of safe spaces. When we protect a child’s right to play, we’re protecting their right to a full, inclusive, healthy and happy childhood.
